As part of the establishment of the Vehicular Cross-Border Language Commissions in East Africa, ACALAN organized an operational and planning workshop in Jigjiga, Ethiopia, between April 11 and 13 2011.

The workshop that brought together the ACALAN Secretariat, the Assembly of Academicians and potential members of the Somali Vehicular Cross-Border Language Commission from the countries in which Somali is spoken ( Ethiopia, Djibouti, Somalia and Kenya) aimed at establishing and planning the priority activities of the Somali Vehicular Cross-Border Language Commission, for its three-year tenure.

Other partners of ACALAN such as representatives of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) in Djibouti, UNESCO Liaison Office in Addis Ababa, representatives of the Local Authorities of Jigjiga, and a representative of the African Union Commission were invited.
